How to convert grams to millilitres

A millilitre of a light, airy ingredient (flour, cocoa, oats) weighs much less than the same millilitre of a dense one (sugar, honey, butter), so the conversion needs the ingredient's weight per volume:

millilitres = grams ÷ grams per millilitre

Example: all-purpose flour weighs 125 g per cup, so 100 g is 100 ÷ 125 = 0.8 cups. The weights come from USDA FoodData Central; each ingredient page links to its USDA record.

Frequently asked questions

How many millilitres are in 100 grams?

100 grams of all-purpose flour = 189 ml, of granulated sugar = 118 ml, of butter = 104 ml. A denser ingredient packs more weight into the same volume, so there is no single answer.

How many millilitres is 100 grams of water?

99.8 ml. Water weighs 1 g per ml, so it is the reference the other ingredients are compared with.

Why are my numbers different from another chart?

Charts use different measurements: flour scooped from the bag weighs more than flour spooned into the cup. The weights here are USDA FoodData Central measurements, each linked to its source.

Should I measure by weight or by millilitres?

Weight. A kitchen scale gives the same result every time; a cup of flour can vary by 20% or more depending on how it was filled.
