How to convert cups to grams

A cup of a light, airy ingredient (flour, cocoa, oats) weighs much less than the same cup of a dense one (sugar, honey, butter), so the conversion needs the ingredient's weight per volume:

grams = cups × grams per cup

Example: all-purpose flour weighs 125 g per cup, so 2 cups is 2 × 125 = 250 g. The weights come from USDA FoodData Central; each ingredient page links to its USDA record.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in 1 cup?

1 cup of all-purpose flour = 125 g, of granulated sugar = 200 g, of butter = 227 g. A denser ingredient packs more weight into the same volume, so there is no single answer.

How many grams is 1 cup of water?

237 g. Water weighs 1 g per ml, so it is the reference the other ingredients are compared with.

Why are my numbers different from another chart?

Charts use different measurements: flour scooped from the bag weighs more than flour spooned into the cup. The weights here are USDA FoodData Central measurements, each linked to its source.

Should I measure by weight or by cups?

Weight. A kitchen scale gives the same result every time; a cup of flour can vary by 20% or more depending on how it was filled.
